Something I’ve Been Noticing
I don’t know if this will make sense to anyone else, but maybe it will.
Sometimes, I get this sudden wave of fear—like if I’m not in arm’s reach of my babies, something might happen. They could be asleep, perfectly safe, tucked in tight. But if I go downstairs to grab something… or step into the shower for just a minute… my mind starts spinning.
Have you ever felt that?
That quiet panic that doesn’t quite match the moment?
I know it’s probably a leftover echo from postpartum anxiety. It’s not as loud as it used to be, but the reflex is still there. The urge to peek in, to check, to make sure.
It’s not logic. It’s love. Fierce, protective love.
Where My Mind’s Been Going
I’ve been sitting with this question:
What if I had that same instinct to check in with the Holy Spirit?
Not out of guilt or pressure. But out of longing. Out of love.
What if my spirit had that same urgency? That deep, gut-level pull to pause—to whisper, “God, are You here? What are You saying?”
It made me realize how automatic my checking is with my kids. No reminders needed. I just do it. Because I care. Because I love them. Because something in me wants to draw near.
I don’t always have that with God. I wish I did.
Sometimes I forget to check in. I drift. I get busy.
I rely on the last word I heard instead of seeking a fresh one.
I react instead of reconnecting.
Do you ever feel that way, too?
That you want to want Him more?
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8a (ESV)
It doesn’t say “only if you’re consistent” or “only if your mind isn’t racing.”
It just says come. And He meets us there.
Maybe our instincts can be retrained.
Maybe love can lead us closer—not just to the ones we’ve been entrusted with, but to the One who entrusted us in the first place.
If You’ve Been Feeling a Bit Distant Too
If you’ve been feeling distant from God, or if your spiritual habits don’t come as naturally as other ones—be gentle with yourself. And maybe ask:
- When do I feel the strongest pull to be near God?
- What “check-in” moments already exist in my life that I can start associating with prayer?
- Could I treat moments of anxiety or pause as an invitation to come close—rather than a sign that I’ve failed?
And here’s a soft nudge, from one tired-but-trying soul to another:
Let’s not just wish for a stronger connection with God—
Let’s notice the places in our lives where that same instinct is already alive.
And let Him meet us there.
A Quiet Prayer to Close With
God, retrain my heart to check in with You—not from panic, but from love.
Help me recognize the quiet moments that are already sacred.
Turn my urges into invitations.
And when I feel that rush to run toward what I love—remind me You’re near, too.
Always near.
Amen.
